Underground warning tape is typically installed 12 inches or less below the finished grade. Install the tape a minimum of 12 inches above the utility, with 24 to 36 inches of separation preferred.
These recommendations are made to facilitate providing a visible warning before excavation equipment reaches a buried utility and to prevent both the utility and tape being dug in the same excavation movement which could happen if the tape and utility are buried too close together in depth.
