741.2.240 Detection Systems for Thermoplastic Pipes

"A. Warning Tape
Acid and alkali-resistant polyethylene film warning tape, minimum 6 inches wide and 4 mils thick, continuously marked with description of utility, with metallic core encased in a protective jacket for corrosion protection, detectable by metal detector when tape is buried up to 30 inches deep; in blue color. Install tape while backfilling trench.

B. Direct-Bury Tracer Wire
Minimum 14-gauge copper-clad steel tracer wire with 30 mil LLDPE jacket in APWA blue.

C. Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Tracer Wire
Minimum 12-gauge wire copper-clad steel tracer wire with 45 mil HDPE jacket in APWA blue."

741.3.040 Installation

"... Install tracer wire or warning tape for all direct-buried plastic pipe. Comply with water utility company’s requirements, or when not prescribed, use tracer wire. For horizontal directional drilled pipe, bore tracer wire with pipe."

Open Specification Document

741.3.100 Backfill

"Place and compact initial backfill of approved soil 12 inches above top of pipe. Carefully compact initial backfill under pipe haunches, and compact evenly up on both sides and along the full length of piping to avoid damage or displacement of pipe.

Place and compact final backfill of soil to final subgrade elevation. Install tracer wire or warning tape directly above pipe, 12 inches below finished grade."

742.2.230 Detection Wire for Thermoplastic Pipes

"A. Warning Tape
Acid and alkali-resistant polyethylene film warning tape, minimum 6 inches wide and 4 mils thick, continuously marked with description of utility, with metallic core encased in a protective jacket for corrosion protection, detectable by metal detector when tape is buried up to 30 inches deep; in green color. Install tape while backfilling trench.

B. Direct-Bury Tracer Wire
Minimum 14-gauge copper-clad steel tracer wire with 30 mil LLDPE jacket in APWA green

C. Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Tracer Wire
Minimum 12-gauge wire copper-clad steel tracer wire with 45 mil HDPE jacket in APWA green."

Open Specification Document

742.3.040 Installation

"... Install public sewers with a minimum of 2 feet of cover in non-paved areas and 5 feet of cover under roadways and waterways. Install tracer wire or warning tape for all direct-buried thermoplastic pipe. Comply with the wastewater operator’s requirements, or when not prescribed, use tracer wire. For horizontal directional drilled pipe, bore tracer wire with pipe."

 Open Specification Document

742.3.090(a) Backfill, Placement and Compaction of Non-Paved Areas

"Place and compact initial backfill of approved soil 8 inches above top of pipe. Carefully compact initial backfill under pipe haunches, and compact evenly up on both sides and along the full length of piping to avoid damage or displacement of pipe. At 24 inches of backfill, inspect interior of pipe to determine if line displaced or other damage has occurred.

Place and compact final backfill of soil to final subgrade elevation. Install tracer wire or warning tape directly above pipe, 12 inches below finished grade.  Construct a plastic soil blanket in accordance with 203.3.090 to a minimum thickness of 12 inches.

Prior to final acceptance, correct deficiencies in surface finish, grade, contamination, segregation, soft spots, wet spots, laminations, and other deficiencies at no direct pay. Correct deficiencies by removing and replacing or as directed."

821.3.070 (L) Mechanical Construction Requirements for Facilities, Pipe Installation (All Pipe)

" ... 6. Provide detectable warning tape on all underground non-metallic lines. Use acid and alkali-resistant, PE film warning tape manufactured for marking and identifying underground utilities, a minimum of 6 inches wide and 4 mils thick, continuously inscribed with a description of the utility. The tape shall have a metallic core encased in a protective jacket for corrosion protection, detectable by metal detector when tape is buried up to 30 inches deep. Follow APWA and ANSI/ASME A13.1 for installation and color requirements."
